Sgt. Theresa Vail "A Woman With A Crown And Combat Boots"/Famous People YOU Didn't Know Served Your Country

Miss America's Sgt. Theresa Vail Is First Contestant to Expose Tattoos
1) "Miss Kansas Teresa Vail"

So ladies, I KNOW we've all heard of this girl in combat boots and who took home a crown. But really WHO IS SHE?!?! Talk about a strong, gorgeous military woman. I mean come on guys! She isn't only the looker but quite the inspiration. But I mean you have to get to know her first before you take her out to dinner. But really! Who is this mystery woman? And what makes her such a role model today? Well, I'm curious too!

1) "Once the competition's preliminaries begin in Atlantic City, N.J., on Tuesday, Sept. 10, Vail will be the second contestant in the military to compete (Miss Utah 2007 was a combat medic in the Army National Guard)."

WHOA! That's really impressive about the fact that she has such a passion for the military like I do. But what made her interested? And what makes her such a good image for young girls to look up to?

1) "Nobody expects a soldier to be a beauty queen," Vail says, "but I'm all about breaking stereotypes."

Another thing she's "all about" is empowering women

"I was bullied when I was a kid. It got so bad that I nearly took my own life ... My dad [an Army dentist stationed in Germany] took me hunting with him and it saved my life. Ever since then, I've been an outdoors girl," she says. "My passion is empowering girls through male-dominated outdoor sports."

She adds, "I want to help them develop confidence, to let them know that they have what it takes to accomplish anything they want to accomplish. I know many young girls look at beauty candidates and think, 'What a perfect life they have.' But I want them to know that I haven't led a perfect life. And that beauty comes from the inside."

2) "World War II" Take a guess on who this might be.

OK. You could most likely take a guess of who might and have might not been in combat boots. HOWEVER there are some people that might just catch you off guard. Can you guess the person up at the top? I'll tell you what he did

2) "...was an infantry clerk and drew cartoons for several Army newspapers."

Well if you couldn't take a guess, I'll just give it to you...

3) "The Founder, Editor-in-Chief and Chief Creative Officer of Playboy, Hugh M. Hefner, is a man who has profoundly influenced society in the last 50 years while his publication remains the world's best-selling men's lifestyle magazine."

veteran chuck
2) " air policeman

The pictures a little blurry but this guy is probably not the most shocking! I mean if you can finish this riddle, then you'll know who this is...

4) " Chuck Norris threw a grenade and killed 50 people, then it exploded."

Maybe not the funniest joke I've ever heard but hey you can never go wrong when it comes to, that's right, Chuck Norris. He served in South Korea as an air-policeman then got interested in martial arts.

veteran rob riggle
2) "Served in Kosovo, Liberia, and Afghanistan"

So there's no really guessing where you've seen this guy in "21 Jump Street" is your favorite movie EVER! *hint hint* But it's still awesome to know cool facts about people that are pretty famous. Rob Riggle would most likely be the coolest person when it comes to acting. But what did he do in the military?

2) "Riggle was a lieutenant colonel in the Marine Corps, and public affairs officer with the NYC unit. He was still serving when he was cast on Saturday Night Live in 2004."

That's pretty wicked if you ask me! But what about what he was thinking?  Well check this out!

5) " I always wanted to try to do comedy and acting, and if I put on those wings, in all reality, in all likelihood, I wouldn’t get to try comedy and acting. So I stopped flying for the Marines, and they made me a ground officer [a contract to be a Marine ground officer is only four years], sent me to Defense Information School and made me a Public Affairs Officer."

What to Consider Talking to a Recruiter/ Makeup for Women in the Military

1) "GET ANSWERS TO ALL YOUR QUESTIONS"

Have you wanted to talk to a recruiter but have been holding it off? Maybe you're shy about it. It's not that bad! It's just like interviewing for a job. Make sure you have questions embedded in your mind before you go in. But where do you start? What questions do you even ask? Well, let's check out good things to have in mind first!

2) "
  • Understand eligibility and military life
  • Pick the right service for you
  • Understand the jobs you're eligible for
  • Understand the benefits you can get
  • Get the best benefits package possible
  • Prepare for basic training and a military career"

I know these are just the basics but hey! Everyone has to start somewhere! Here's a few frequently asked questions recruiters get that you might want to keep in mind if you're interested.

2) "How long do I have to enlist for? What's the minimum commitment?
Answer: Generally the minimum is two years, but the amount of benefits you receive directly relates to your commitment. "

"How long is basic training? Where is it? What is it like?
Answer:

"What jobs are available?
Answer: Ask your recruiter about openings in these and related fields. Then, use the delayed entry program to get the training you want. Training programs are related to the job specialty that you are assigned to. You should ask your recruiter about the entire career path in that chosen field. Most military specialties have follow-on training as you gain expertise and rise in rank."

"What are the possibilities for remote or overseas duty stations?
Answer: All services have overseas opportunities. Overseas service is often considered a "square to fill" for advancement. Ask your recruiter."

Crazy! I know! Taking a step into life is pretty scary considering we all just got out ACT scores in. But maybe life giving you lemons is too much to handle so tossing them away and grabbing a pair of combat boots wouldn't be so bad!

3) "10 Most Attractive Female Armed Forces"

Come on ladies! I know makeup is such an important thing! Well, it is for me! But do you seem like the military might get in the way? Not on my watch! I'll show you the standards of what and what NOT to wear makeup wise!

4) "Females may wear cosmetics if they are conservative and complement the uniform and their complexion...Permanent makeup, such as eyebrow or eyeliner, is authorized as long as the makeup conforms to the standards outlined above... Females will not wear shades of lipstick and nail polish that distinctly contrast with their complexion, that detract from the uniform, or that are extreme. Some examples of extreme colors include, but are not limited to, purple, gold, blue, black, white, bright (fire-engine) red, khaki, camouflage colors, and fluorescent colors. Soldiers will not apply designs to nails or apply two-tone or multi-tone colors to nails. Females will comply with the cosmetics policy while in any military uniform or while in civilian clothes on duty."

Not too bad. Am I right? Basically what this is saying is that it's okay to wear as long as it's very natural. But that doesn't mean you can go out on a night with girl friends and put on your best dress and a red lip! While being in uniform, however, toning it down just a little would not do anybody harm.

Air National Guard/ Berry Field Base

1) "119th Civil Engineer Squadron members board a military aircraft Dec. 6, at the North Dakota Air National Guard, Fargo, N.D., as the depart on a six-month deployment to Southwest Asia. (DoD photo by Senior Master Sgt. David H. Lipp)"

So what if you want to serve BUT you want to be more local. Well, the Air National Guard is always in option. There's not always guarantee that you'll be stationed where you desire or be deployed but come on guys! This doesn't seem like a horrible option.

1) " 'We do things a little differently in the Army versus the Air (Force), but in both instances whenever we’re sending off our Airmen and our Soldiers, this is our opportunity to thank you for what you do, wish you well in the coming months in terms of the mission, and most importantly, show our support for you, both the Airmen and the family members, as members of the North Dakota National Guard,' Maj. Gen. David Sprynczynatyk, North Dakota adjutant general, told the Airmen and their families before they left."

Serving your country in any way is an honor. Being away from family and friends is something they sometimes to deal with. And Skype just can't reenact those moments you've missed. The National Guard can help with that. But there are situations where people are deployed.

1) " 'Having a family member there is kind of nice, but it does actually make it a little bit harder because when I’m gone the person I would look to for snow removal, maybe help around my house, will be a couple doors down. … It’s good for me over there, but for being back here it makes it more difficult,' Tracy said.
Leaving so soon before the many would observe holidays poses an extra challenge for military families, some of whom celebrated early. Others are holding out for a summer celebration after their Airman’s return.
'Actually knowing that Steve is going over and there’s Soldiers coming home to have Christmas with their families makes our Christmas a little more special,' said Bridget Schwartz, whose husband Master Sgt. Steve Schwartz is deployed for the second time.' "

2) "118th Airlift Wing C-130 unloads Tennessee National Guard equipment at Berry Field ANGB"

Where's the nearest Air National Guard close here? Berry Field Air National Guard in Nashville, Tennessee. Want to stay close to home? Check this area out. Maybe it would be right for you! But what do they do there? Great question!

2) "Berry Field Air National Guard Base is the military enclave of Nashville International Airport in Nashville,Tennessee. It has hosted the Tennessee Air National Guard 118th Airlift Wing (in various designations) since 1937.[1] The base is home to Headquarters, Tennessee Air National Guard and the 118th Airlift Wing (118 AW), the latter serving as host wing for the installation. Berry Field and the 118 AW currently operate the C-130 International Training Center, an AETC activity in support of DoD Foreign Military Sales (FMS) of the C-130, training up to 150 international military C-130E and C-130H flight crew and maintenance students annually.[1  "

Sounds super awesome right? The Air National Guard might be something you want to check out! It's defiantly something I even considered.

Learning to march.
3) "Even if you think you’re physically fit, you still need to prepare for Basic Training. You must meet the following fitness standards even before reporting to BMT."

Think you're ready? Don't be fooled! Hey, being trained for the Air National Guard is harder than it looks.

3) "In Basic Training, you'll learn the basics of Air Guard knowledge, as well as start the most intense fitness training of your life. Each week will focus on a new area to make you an elite Airman. You'll learn basic combat and survival skills, as well as how to communicate in the battlefield. You'll push your mental stamina to the limit and find out just how strong you really are when you face the ultimate obstacle course. Later, prepare yourself for an adrenaline rush where you'll test your new skills by going head-to-head with other enlistees in simulated hand-to-hand combat scenarios. All your preparation really gets tested in the Basic Expeditionary Airmen Skill Training. Finally, in week eight, you have made it! It's graduation week, and you have a lot to be proud of."

You think have what it takes to join today? Go talk to a recruiter! Maybe serving near you won't be so bad after all!

Video Blog on What's Inspired me so far/Women in Combat

1) "Lieutenant Tina Turner"

More jobs opening to women has truly inspired me. I'm going to spend this weekend going more into detail about the first post I put up on my blog (http://mynewblogawesomeblog.blogspot.com/2015/02/military-police-officerjobs-opening-to.html). I'm also explaining why it's important to me and how women feel about the military today. I'm going to quickly give you a woman's point of view from Lieutenant Tina Turner and her response to combat situations.

1)"I remember hearing the bullets hit the ground beside me and hit my truck behind me."

She said as they were under heavy attack.

"Our squad leader had us sneak around and flank them. From a trench line that overlooked the field, we laid down fire, and I know that I shot, and made fall, three. After twenty minutes, most of the insurgents out in that field were incapacitated, but there were three more still left in the trench line opposite us, about thirty meters away. We knew that the only way we were going to end this is if we took them out. The staff sergeant and myself, we jumped in the trench; our teammate followed us along the top. I was so concentrated that I couldn't hear the bullets. I didn't even hear my own rifle. We hugged the wall of the trench on the right side. It kind of jutted out a little bit and gave us cover, but we couldn't get the right angle to kill them with our rifles. We resorted to throwing grenades. That did the trick. Looking at what was left of them, I felt nothing."

Women In The Military Today vs. Back Then: What's Different

Marine Corps to Open Officer Infantry School to Women
1) "Marine Corps to Open Officer Infantry School to Women"

Let's talk about what women are doing in the military today. Did they differ from back then? How so? These are questions everyone knows the answer to. Jobs in the military today are much more open to women back then. But what's the time jump? Why are women important in training today? Do women have to met the same physical training stand as men?

1) "The Marines have made little progress in integrating women into jobs they already qualify for, and the purpose of a proposed physical screening test is questionable since it focuses on strength-based measures and not skills actually needed for the work, according to Greg Jacob, a former Marine and policy director of the Service Women’s Action Network.
The Marines’ plan calls for testing women to see if they can deadlift 135 pounds, bench 115 pounds, carry 95 pounds for 50 meters while wearing full combat gear, load a 120mm tank round and scale a 7-foot wall. But these skills might not be needed, Jacob said.
“It’s not looking at the jobs,” Jacob said at a Wednesday briefing on Capitol Hill. “If you want a job in the artillery, you have to pick up the artillery shell and shove it into the breach of the gun. Is this proxy test going to evaluate that? We don’t know. ... It’s a plan, but you’re not really sure what it’s explaining or what it’s doing.”
Jacob also questioned whether the current standards are gender-neutral."

No matter what job someone does, everyone will always have struggles they'll have to face. But times have changed for the better for women in the military. Jobs are opening up more as well and other things.

Picture from Civil War-era sheet music
2) "Women in the Civil War"

What was the Civil War like for women in the United State? It's much different than the military today. Back then, it seemed as if women were sneaking in to fight.

2) "More than 400 women disguised themselves as men and fought in the Union and Confederate armies during the Civil War."

That doesn't seem like very much compared to the size of the Union and Confederate Army. But women didn't just fight as soldiers. There were other things they did, aiding men around the battlefields.

2) Nearly 20,000 women worked more directly for the Union war effort. Working-class white women and free and enslaved African-American women worked as laundresses, cooks and “matrons,” and some 3,000 middle-class white women worked as nurses. The activist Dorothea Dix, the superintendent of Army nurses, put out a call for responsible, maternal volunteers who would not distract the troops or behave in unseemly or unfeminine ways: Dix insisted that her nurses be “past 30 years of age, healthy, plain almost to repulsion in dress and devoid of personal attractions.” (One of the most famous of these Union nurses was the writer Louisa May Alcott.)
Army nurses traveled from hospital to hospital, providing “humane and efficient care for wounded, sick and dying soldiers.” They also acted as mothers and housekeepers–“havens in a heartless world”–for the soldiers under their care.
3) "Women in the First World War"
Women were an aid one way or another in every war. In the First World War, some women aided as nurses and others in many jobs.
3) "In general, women did very well, surprising men with their ability to undertake heavy work and with their efficiency.  By the middle of the war they were already regarded as a force to be proud of, part of the glory of Britain.  However, their entrance into the workforce was initially greeted with hostility for the usual sexist reasons and also because male workers worried that women's willingness to work for lower wages would put them out of work."
Women were important in every way. They worked hard for men at war so the economy would't be at stake. Bombs were made in factories to help as well as other difficult jobs. They were being the back bone to the country to help. Even though they had their struggles, without a woman's help, the war would be hopeless.

\
4) "Army nurses in Vietnam cared for the civilian population as well as military"
Vietnam was another dreadful war to suffer through. Men with off with women wishing them luck as well and love letters being exchanged time to time. But every war is painful and with soldiers, nurses, cooks, and many others, how could the war possibly be beat from within? How did women play a role here?
4) "As male casualties mounted and demands to free servicemen for combat grew, the presence of nurses and other servicewomen increased in Southeast Asia. By the time American troops withdrew from Vietnam, more than 7,500 women had served. Almost 6,000 of these women were nurses and medical specialists. Seven Army nurses and one Air Force nurse died in Vietnam."
Women were not only recorded to be nurses, but in combat as well. Women were important to every war for aiding in help and in today's military, still play an important role.

3) Army ROTC North Georgia students in a field next to a helicopter.

ROTC is something I'm going into right after high school. Not only do I want to serve my country, but being an officer seems like the right fit for me. There are many different opportunists doing ROTC as a program in college. Even the location of the college aids in training for cadets. This helps me understand and break down which choices of colleges would be the right way to become an officer. But what does an everyday for cadets on campus even look like? What will a day to day life for anyone as a freshman? Well let's check it out!
